Velma Ruth (VandenBerg) Murr was born March 6, 1921, in Marion County, Iowa the daughter of John and Lois (Augustine) Vanden Berg.

She graduated from Knoxville High School with the Class of 1939 and then taught for two years in the rural schools of Brownlee and Franklin Center.

On July 13, 1940, Velma was united in marriage to Edd Murr. They were blessed with four children: Larry (Sharon) of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Roger (Donna) of Knoxville, Iowa, Mary Loynachan of Reinbeck, Iowa, and Martha (Randy) Johansen of Pelham, Alabama.

Velma was a devout member of the Columbia United Methodist Church.

Velma passed away Thursday, February 27, 2020, at the Mahaska County Health Center at the age of 98 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edd, son, Larry, and brother, Donald Vanden Berg.

Those left to cherish Velma’s memory include her children: Roger, Mary, and Martha; grandsons: Brett (Sara) Murr of Savage, Minnesota, Todd (Tammy) Murr of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and David Murr of Minneapolis, Minnesota; seven great-grandchildren: Thomas, Ashley, Ryan, Austin, Laura, Madison and Cameron, and many other family members and friends.

A Memorial Service for Velma Murr, age 98 of Knoxville, will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Burial of cremains will follow in Columbia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbia United Methodist Church, the Columbia E.M.S., or to the donor’s choice.
