Susie Schippers, age 92, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa, IA.

Susie was born on March 7, 1931, in Hamilton, IA, the youngest of 10 to Earnest and Alice (Fowler) Courtney. She grew up attending school in Hamilton before attending and graduating in 1948 from Knoxville High School.

She was united in marriage to Orvel Schippers in Lovilia, IA, on May 23, 1948. They farmed and raised their family on the farm which has been in the family name for four generations in rural Bussey (Buxton). Susie and Orvel shared 53 years of marriage before Orvel’s passing on January 1, 2001.

Susie was a homemaker, did housecleaning, and worked as a cook for the Twin Cedars School. She enjoyed being outdoors and flower gardening. She also enjoyed sewing. She was a great baker, known for her homemade bread and molasses cookies. She was very matriarchal and when the call went out, she was always there. Above all else, Susie loved spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed family reunions.

Susie is survived by 5 children, Alice Ann (Gary) Nace of Bussey, John (Cindy) Schippers of Tracy, Wes, (Johnna) Schippers of Oskaloosa, Marv (Chris) Schippers of Oskaloosa, and Dale (Holly) Schippers of Bussey; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren and 1 on the way. Susie is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

Susie is preceded in death by her husband, Orvel; 2 sons, Orvel Dean and Rod Schippers; a grandchild, Caitlin Schippers; and 9 siblings.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Susie’s family present from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. to greet family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Tharp Susie CourtneyFuneral Home in Albia, with Marty Williams officiating. Burial will follow services at Pringle Cemetery in Bussey. A luncheon will be held at Union Liberty Church in Bussey following the committal service.

Instead of flowers, memorials have been established to Union Liberty Church in Bussey or the Welcome Home Soldier Monument in Albia.
