With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Stephen David Porter, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, who left us unexpectedly on January 28, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on January 15, 1951, in Knoxville, Iowa, Steve was the beloved son of Ralph H. Porter Jr. and Dorothy Sweem Porter.

Steve’s life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and love. He graduated from Knoxville High School, where he participated in many activities including band, theater, basketball, track, golf, and baseball. His passion for music was a lifelong joy that he shared with his family and friends.

When he was 15 years old, Steve suffered a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for two months. When he awoke, he faced the daunting task of re-learning everything. His determination and perseverance shone through as he not only re-learned all his skills but also became completely ambidextrous. Remarkably, he was able to graduate on time with his class of 1969 , a testament to his incredible resilience. This injury had a profound impact on Steve’s life and those around him. Despite the struggles, Steve never lost hope. He remained loving and always managed to live in the moment, appreciating what he had, even if it wasn’t what his life might have been without the injury.

On December 30, 1972, Steve married Bonnie Hodgson. To this union, two children were born: Amanda and Melodie. Following their divorce, Steve met Yvonne “Vonnie” Romans, who became his longtime companion. Her family also embraced Steve as a father figure, adding another layer of love and connection to his life.

As an adult, Steve worked as a locksmith, a janitor at Nell McGowen Jr. High, and a delivery driver at Pizza Hut. He took great pride in being a working member of the community despite his challenges from his accident.

Steve had a deep love for the outdoors, enjoying fishing and camping trips with his daughters and Vonnie. He was known to bring home stray animals and pick up stranded turtles in the road and relocate them to safer areas. He passed his love of animals on to his children.
Steve supported his daughters by attending all their school activities. He would often tell them he was their biggest fan.

Steve was known for his kind heart and generous spirit. He was a devoted Red Cross volunteer, spending countless hours at the VA in Knoxville.
His passion for music was another way he gave back to the community, traveling to local nursing homes with his daughters to sing for the patients, bringing joy and comfort through their performances.
