Sherry Zickel

Return to Class of 1962

Sherry Zickel01/29/2019
Sherry Lynn (Zickel) Vander Linden of Lincoln, Nebraska passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on Tuesday evening, January 29, 2019, at the age 74.

Sherry was born on June 4, 1944, in Knoxville, Iowa, to Frank Zickel and Mildred (Harrington) Zickel. She grew up in Knoxville and graduated with the Knoxville High School Class of 1962.

Following high school, Sherry attended the University of Northern Iowa for a short time before marrying Dennis Stevens. She was later united in marriage to Alan Vander Linden on October 10, 1969. Through this union, three awesome daughters were born: Edye Lynn in 1970, Joni Beth in 1972, and Emily Jo in 1975.

Sherry was one of a kind…beautiful, funny, stubborn, smart, and humble. She loved her “girls” more than anything on this earth. She was a very talented seamstress, a good listener, and a great source of love and affection for all who knew her. Her affinity for Hallmark movies, cooking, shopping, sports, eating, and all things Nebraska Cornhuskers will not soon be forgotten.

Her life was not always easy, but despite her obstacles, she persevered…this led to her last years being her best ones. She thrived on being independent and would get sassy when she had to fight to maintain it. Despite the distance, she lived for talking with her girls and corresponding by mail. Her loving words, infectious smile, thoughtful cards, warm hugs, and selfless nature will truly be missed. Things she will not miss: her walker and Joni ordering her around.

Sherry is survived by her beloved family: Edye (Jeff) Johnson of Dunkerton, Iowa; Joni (Bill) Page of Tonganoxie, Kansas; and Emily (Craig) Taylor of Magnolia, Texas. She has been blessed with five beautiful but ornery grandchildren: Lane, Trace, Clare Johnson, and Thatcher and Sawyer Page. She is also survived by dear niece Paula Nelson and nephew Dan Zickel and families.

Sherry was preceded in death by her father Frank Zickel, her mother Mildred Zickel, her brother, Terry, sister-in-law Carolyn, and nephew Douglas Zickel, all of Knoxville.Sherry Zickel
