Roy Laverne Sams, 60, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Thursday November 2, 2023, at his home.
Roy was born on May 1, 1963, in Mt. Ayr, Iowa to John and Doris (Overton) Sams.
Roy attended Knoxville High School. Roy enjoyed hunting deer and pheasant, going to Las Vegas, and watching football with his son Justin.
His greatest joy was his grandchildren, to them he was known as Papa.
There was never a dull moment with Roy who enjoyed telling stories to anyone who would listen.
Roy is survived his wife, Darla; children, Ashleigh (Kevin) Chase, Ciara (Dalton Coffey) De Groot, Justin De Groot, Shauntel De Groot and Ariana De Groot; grandchildren, Kenny Chase, Frankie Chase, Jaxson Chase, Jerymiah Coffey, Kentrell De Groot, Daniyal De Groot, Keylani De Groot, Carter Coffey and Terayvian De Groot; sisters, Delores (John) Hardy, Linda (Joe) Noland and June Albers.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bert Cornelison and brother, John Sams Jr.
A visitation will be held at Sunset Memorial Chapel & Gardens, 7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, November 13, at 5 pm-7 pm.
A funeral service will be held at the same location the following day, Tuesday, November 14th at 11:30am.
The burial is scheduled at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville, Iowa at 2:00 pm.
