Services for Ronald M. Betterton of Jefferson, who passed away Oct. 19, 1988 in Jefferson,
were held Oct. 22 at Central Christian Church in Jefferson The Rev. Ray Smith officiated.
Music was provided by Jeff and Cindy Deal, vocalists, and Joyce Kinsman, organist.
Interment was in Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville. Arrangements were made by Slininger-Rossow
Funeral Home of Jefferson.
He was born April 8, 1942, in Knoxville to Merle and
Dorothy Thomas Betterton. He grew up in Knoxville after living a short time in Missouri.
He attended and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1960. He attended the State
University from 1960 and 1962 when he then transferred to Drake University.
He was
united in marriage to Molly Stittsworth on Dec. 22, 1962 in Knoxville. They were
the parents of three children. He was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers at
Rock Island, Ill. from 1964 until 1969, while continuing to live in Knoxville. He
then was office manager for K.S. Kramme, Inc. Bridge Construction Co. from 1969
to 1971 when they moved to Jefferson where Ron became Greene County Engineer.
In
1973 he did concrete research work on pavement in Greene County. He was a member
of the Central Christian Church in Jefferson. He also belonged to Morning Star Lodge
#159 A.F. and A.M. in Jefferson and was a past member and president of the Kiwanis
Club.
He was a member of the Iowa Engineering Society, the National Association
of County Engineers and also belonged to the American Road Builders Association.
He had officiated at high school athletic games and was a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa girls High School Athletic Association Union.
He is survived by his wife Molly; their children, Joel of Ames, Gregory of Audubon
and Cynthia of Jefferson; his parents, Merle and Dorothy Betterton of Knoxville;
two brothers, Dwayne of Pella and Richard of Cedar Falls; a grandfather, Zealand
Thomas of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by
an infant daughter, Kimberly Sue.
