A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Knoxville, Iowa. A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Dick will be interred at Graceland Cemetery immediately following services.

Dick was born on May 3, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa to Fred and Opal (Warren) Dishman. He grew up in the Chariton area and attended Chariton High School. Prior to completion of his studies, Dick joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country. Upon completion of his service, he married a young lady by the name of Ethel Moody. This marriage was blessed with four children.

Dick was a firm believer that education was crucial in life. This belief led him to contact Knoxville High School about completing his education. School officials informed him they would assist him in obtaining a GED. Dick wanted no part of that and requested that he be enrolled in Knoxville High School as a student. His request was granted, and Dick became a full-time high school student in his late 20’s with a wife, three children, and a job with the VA. He proudly received his high school diploma at the age of 28 in Knoxville, Iowa.

Dick’s persistence and work ethic certainly did not cease with his graduation. He worked as a nurse’s aide at the VA for 22 years before moving to the Paint Department. In total, Dick gave 37 years to the VA. After his retirement, he had no problem keeping busy. He worked at Barney’s DX, delivered cars for Devore Motors, and repaired bicycles in his garage.

Even when he wasn’t working, Dick managed to keep busy at home. He loved working in the yard, always keeping it meticulous. Dick also enjoyed walks, reading books, and doing puzzles. Never giving up until the last mile was walked, the last page was read, or the last puzzle piece was in place.

Dick’s main priority throughout his life, was his family. He created countless memories over the years which will be cherished by those he loved so deeply. Whether it was square dancing or bowling with Ethel or hanging out with kids, family came first for Dick. He was eventually blessed with the miracle of grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he adored. He was proud of his family, and they showed immense pride in him. He will be deeply missed by all those who loved him.Richard Dishman
