Funeral services for Norland R. Hayes, 75, of Knoxville, who died June 3, 1999, at the Pella Regional Health Center, were held June 7, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville.

Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Military honors were accorded by Baty-Tucker Post #168, American Legion, and John Myers Post #3519, VFW. The Rev. Bob Ward officiated at the services.

Music was provided by Barbara Wenberg and Kathleen Taylor, soloists. Pallbearers were Jerald Rankin, Dan Marsh, Jimmy Cox, Larry McVey, Philip Richards, and Alan Vander Linden.

Honorary bearers were Ralph Porter, Tom Tucker, Dick Darnell, Van Fast, Carpenter Morkert,and Tom Sheehy.

Toar was born January 7, 1924, in Pleasantville, the son of Lloyd
and Quentin Ghrist Hayes. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1942.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the South Pacific and AleutianIslands.

He was united in marriage to Rita Wagner on November 27, 1946, in Knoxville. The couple spent their entire married lives in Marion County. He retired last year after 45 years as owner of Hayes Bump Shop and Wrecker Service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Past Commander of Baty-Tucker Post #168, American Legion, and was a member of John Myers Post #3519, VFW, and I.O.O.F. Lodge, all of Knoxville.

He was also a charter member of the Knoxville Y's Mens' Club, former board member of the District Boy Scouts of America, and served for 25 years on the Knoxville Rural Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carmen Braunschweiger; and a brother, Lloyd Hayes.

He is survived by his wife of Knoxville; three daughters, Jill Cook of Helena, Mont., Barbara Wenberg of Bloomington, Minn., and Joyce Smith of Carroll; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
