Mildred Maxine (Harrington) Zickel was born on June 13, 1916, in Marion County to Clarence Floyd
and Agnes Faye (Cummings) Harrington.
Millie attended rural school until eighth grade, then transferred to Knoxville Schools
and graduated with the Class of 1933. She then attended Simpson College where she
earned a teaching certificate. Millie taught in country schools for six years.
On Nov. 30, 1941, she married Frank Zickel, Jr. and to this union, a son, Terry, and
a daughter, Sherry were born. As the children were growing up, Millie was a full-time housewife and mother.
In later years she worked as a salesperson for a book and gift center until retiring
in 1975. In 1975, Frank and Millie began wintering at a trailer park in Mesa, Ariz.
and continued to be snowbirds for the next twelve years. Millie enjoyed sewing
and quilting, and in earlier years she was active in the Eastern Star.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family; she will be remembered as a
loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Millie died on Dec. 26, 2006, at West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 89.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Douglas Zickel; her husband,
Frank; a sister, Margaret Tonda, and a brother, Lt. Col. Tom Harrington.
Survivors include her son, Terry (Carolyn) Zickel of Knoxville; daughter, Sherry
Vander Linden of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and
many other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 29 with Swann Juline officiating.
The interment was in Graceland Cemetery.
