Maxine (Momyer) Brooks Lister was born on a farm east of Knoxville on July 5, 1913, the daughter of William and Bessie (Stevens) Momyer. She spent her entire life in Marion County.
She started her education at Eureka County School west of Harvey even though their farm was closer to Durham.
When Maxine was in sixth grade the family moved to the family Momyer farm just east of Knoxville. She attended Knoxville High School, graduating in the Class of 1932. After high school, she attended the State Teachers College – now known as the University of Northern Iowa.
Maxine married John Brooks in November of 1934. To this union was born Joan and Roger. John died in January of 1981.
Maxine married Walter Lister in September of 1986. Walter died in February of 1996.
She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church and Mary Circle. She was a member of the KACH Auxiliary, where she enjoyed volunteering in the gift shop when it was her turn. She also volunteered to visit the Methodist patients, as well as the TLC patients in KACH. Maxine was a wonderful entertainer. She was a very talented cook and baker. She was especially known for her cinnamon rolls and pies.
Maxine worked at different places in Knoxville. She worked for three years with Mary Stults Peter Pan Nursery. She worked for 17 years as a receptionist for Dr. George Andrews, until her retirement.
In addition to her parents Maxine was preceded in death by her first husband John Brooks and her second husband Walter Lister. She was also preceded by her daughter Joan Hazelett and her brother Robert Momyer.
Maxine is survived by her son Roger Brooks and his wife Linda; her son-in-law Paul Hazelett and his wife Jan; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Fran Momyer and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation for Maxine will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville, with Maxine’s family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 31st, at the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville, with Pastor Lane Riggle officiating. Burial will follow services at Graceland Cemetery of Knoxville.
