Mary Ann Johnson was born September 4, 1941 in Knoxville, Iowa the daughter of Lowell E. Johnson and Mary Ann (Specht) Johnson.

Mary Ann attended Willow Grove country school in Marion County through the 8th grade and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1959.

Following high school she attended Wichita State University, earning a teaching degree in 1963. Mary Ann first taught in Tucson, Arizona for 5 years; Frankfurt, Germany for 1 year; Yuma, Arizona for 1 year and Quincy, Michigan for 1 year.

In 1971 Mary Ann moved to Belmont, Massachusetts and taught at Winn Brook Elementary for 31 years prior to retirement.

Mary Ann loved to travel and had visited all 50 states, most European countries, and Egypt, Morocco, Australia and New Zealand. She enjoyed music, especially rock ‘n roll, the blues and attending concerts. Mary Ann’s other interests included photography, genealogy, reading and geography.

Mary Ann was a very social person who maintained close contact with a group of friends from the Class of ’59, as well as with a special group from Boston called the Blaney Bunch, who referred to her as “Madam President”.

Above all else, Mary Ann’s family and friends were her greatest joy.

Mary Ann passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age 80 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Those left to cherish Mary Ann’s memory include her siblings: Letha Beckman of Atlanta, Georgia; Genevieve Johnson of Des Moines; Carol (Corwin) Fee of Knoxville and Jim (Terry) Johnson of Van Meter and many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
