Martha J. (Johnson) Krohn, 84, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Medical School, and a memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, October 4th at Unity Church of Des Moines.

Martha was born April 1, 1923, in Knoxville, Iowa to Joseph and Mary (Hays) Johnston. She grew up in Knoxville before moving to Chicago for a few years, then ultimately to Des Moines in 1947. Martha was a 2nd-grade teacher in the Des Moines Public Schools for more than 20 years, with a passion for teaching reading. She was an active member of Unity Church of Des Moines.

Martha was devoted to her family, but also found time for her own passions of reading and playing bridge. She enjoyed every one and contributed much through activities at her church and numerous volunteer organizations, such as Hospice.

Martha is survived by her daughters, Marijo Spilman of Peel, Arkansas, and Marti (Howard) Trussell of Plymouth, Minnesota; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Stuart Beardshear Krohn; one brother and one sister.

The family requests any memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
