Funeral services for Marie Anna (Hegwood) Metcalf, 82, of Pleasantville, who died April 13, at the
Pleasant Care Living Center in Pleasantville was held on April 16, 1998, at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville. The burial was at Pleasantville Cemetery.

The Rev. Don Hill officiated at the services. Music was provided by Mildred Brooks, organist, and Beth Burkhead, soloist. Pallbearers were Ted Myers, Jeff Miller, Troy Metcalf, Bob Bowers, Trent Toomey, and Dick Hilsabeck.

Marie was born February 21, 1916, in Marion County, the daughter of Jesse Edward and Gertrude Patch Hegwood. She was raised in the Coal Ridge community and graduated from Knoxville High School.

She attended Simpson College for a few years. She taught at Knoxville and Pleasantville rural schools, and in later years was a substitute teacher for both Knoxville and Pleasantville public schools.

She was united in marriage to Fred Metcalf on December 24, 1939, in Pleasantville. The couple rented several farms in Marion County for years and purchased a farm near Milo in 1964.

They retired from farming in 1979. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Pleasantville and the Retired Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; seven brothers, Leo, John, Bruce, Paul, Lyle, Delmar, and Delbert in infancy; and two sisters, Leah Karr, and Ethel in infancy.

She is survived by two daughters, Gwen Miller of Pleasantville, and Marilyn Baker of Springfield, Mo.; a son, Roger of Columbia, Mo.; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Church of Christ.
