Mahala Sue (Moss) Cox was born on September 6th 1953 in Oskaloosa, IA the daughter of Raymond William Moss and Daisey Juanita (Hartshorn) Moss.

As a child Mahala was active in 4-H and on her family farm.

Mahala graduated from Knoxville Community School in 1971.

Mahala attended DMACC for computer programing later changing her focus to Emergency Medical Technician-Basic upgrading to Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate and holding that level until her retirement.

She also attended Iowa State University Fire Services becoming a Fire Fighter 1, upgrading to National Certified Fire Fighter 1 and further upgrading to National Certified Fire Fighter 2 adding Traumatic Brain Injury Instructor.

She held Certifications in: Hazardous Materials and Terrorism Operations.

Mahala held a Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management.

Mahala was elected twice as President of the Iowa Emergency Management Agency.

She enjoyed her time at the Knoxville Raceway on the Fire and Rescue Crew for over 30 years.Mahala Moss

Mahala passed away on Monday March 10, 2025 at Westridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Juanita; siblings, brothers Pat Moss, Michael Moss, and sister Raydene DeJoode, and her lifelong friend Ruth Graves.

Those left to cherish her memory include her family; daughter Connie (Eric) Grinstead, son Christopher Cox. 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Nephews; Tony (Lori) DeJoode, Chad (Carrie) Moss, Darren Moss, and Danny (Allison) Moss. Nieces Theri DeJoode, Shannon Murphy, and Allison (Kurt) Dittmer, Multiple great-nieces and nephews. As well as many other family members and friends from all over the world.
