Dr. Keith Thomas Maddy died on March 7, 2003, while at Sunrise Health Care Convalescent Hospital in Roseville. He was 79 years old.
He was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Marion County, Iowa, to Herman and Helen Maddy. He was one of four children. After his veterinary education, he went to work on an agricultural extension service veterinary project as an assistant professor in 1946 in Logandale, Nev. It was at this time he met and married Colleen Barlow.
During their marriage of more than 50 years, they raised six children, two boys and four girls. Dr. Maddy faithfully and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a captain in the Veterinary Corps. during the Korean conflict. He served in this capacity for approximately 20 years before retiring. He had a long and prestigious career in the field of veterinary medicine and owned his own pet clinic in Washington, D.C. While in D.C., he also worked for the World Health Organization. He and his family moved to Davis in 1972 where he continued in his profession as a doctor of veterinary medicine and was a professor emeritus at UC Davis.
He had many enjoyments in life. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife and children. He and his wife took many trips together all over the country and Canada with their children. The two also went on several special trips throughout Europe and the Caribbean. He was described as a very devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter Kathleen, and his wife Colleen in August 1997. He is survived by his two sons Donald Maddy of Los Osos and Duane Maddy of Baltimore, Md., and three daughters; Dana Maddy of Sacramento; Danielle Abreos of Roseville and Lori Cruit of Santa Clarita. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Amanda Cristler, Crystal, Nick, Brianna and Michael Maddy, Maria and David Cruit and Alexus Abreos. She also leaves a brother Paul Maddy of Perry, Iowa, and two sisters, Joyce Maddy and Doris Shawyer-Maddy, of Knoxville, Iowa.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. in Davis with burial to follow at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road in Davis. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
