Karen Kay Spring age 61, of Des Moines and formerly of Knoxville passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Methodist Medical Center of Des Moines, Iowa.
Karen was born in Knoxville on April 27, 1951, the twin daughter of Charlie Robert and Cecil Fay (Niemants) Spring.
She grew up in Knoxville and attended the First Presbyterian Church where she was active in the church choir.
Karen graduated from Knoxville High School, class of 1969. After high school, she attended the University of Northern Iowa and received her English Teaching Degree in 1973.
After college, Karen came back to Knoxville for a short time before moving to Des Moines where she has lived for the past 39 years. She began working for Younkers in their book department before moving on to AMACO Credit Card Center working in
collections. Later she worked for TMC Trucking Company in the Human Resources Department.
For the last 16 years, Karen has worked with the Children & Families of Iowa in human resources of which she was the department leader.
Karen enjoyed bookstores, libraries, coffee shops, reading, music, movies, collecting seashells, and Lladro figurines. She was a wonderful cook and had many cookbooks and different recipes.
Karen is survived by her mother, Cecil Spring of Knoxville; and her sister, Sharon
Spring of Cedar Falls. She is also survived by her Goddaughter, Dove Haase of Chicago,
Il; her best friend, Tina Haase Findlay, and husband Brandon of Des Moines; many
cousins; and her wiener puppy, Roman.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Spring, and her sister, Roberta
Spring.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at the
First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, with Pastor Josyph Andrews officiating.
A private family burial will be held at a later date at Graceland Cemetery of Knoxville.
Visitation for Karen will be held from 10:00 a.m. until service time also on Saturday, January 12th, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Karen’s family present.
A memorial in Karen’s memory has been established for the Children & Families of
