 Josephine Spencer02/12/2003
Josephine Adda (Spencer) White, age 72, of Chariton, died of a kidney ailment Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at the Lucas County Health Center Hospice unit.

Mrs. White was born Apr. 8, 1930, in Knoxville, Iowa, the daughter of Howard Burnice Spencer and Lillie Agnes Storm.
She had been a resident of Chariton for the past 15 years.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess, and circle member and helped with Bible School. She was also a member of The Morning Writers Club. She was a great poet and had some of her work published.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlin White. She is survived by three daughters: Merla White of Neosho, Mo., Peggy Randall of Chariton and Von Rosenbalm and husband John of Monett, Mo.; a son, Allen White and wife Mary of Kellogg, Iowa; sister, Louise Nichols of Chariton; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was a friend to many and was loved by her family.

Josephine enjoyed traveling with her daughter, Peggy. This past July, they went to visit a grandson in Georgia, where she walked in the ocean for the first time.

Jo and her sister, Louise were often mistaken for each other and she enjoyed all the kidding they got from it. She was very close to her grandchildren and they loved spending time with her. A couple of them told her she was a cool grandma. Her great-grandchildren loved coming to see her. She always saw to it that they had treats to satisfy each one of their tastes. She will be missed by them all.

Services were held Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Chariton with Pastor Paul Olson officiating. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons Joe Rosenbalm, Tim White, Bryce Smith, Matthew Hill, Tod Michael, and Jered Jones.
