Graveside funeral services for John G. Elliott, 80, of Knoxville, who died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at the Hospice Comfort House in Pella, were held Tuesday, April 6, at the Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Rev. Peter J. Peterson officiated at the services.
Military honors were accorded by Baty-Tucker 168, American Legion and John Myers Post 3519, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Honorary casketbearers were Stu Job, Frank Peak, Ernie Smith, Bob Edwards, Phil Stanley, and Bill Stuchel.
John was born on Nov. 3, 1923, in Des Moines, the son of Harry M. and Clare Gamble Elliott. He graduated from Knoxville High School and attended Drake University in Des Moines. He served with the United States Air Force during World War II in the South,Pacific.
He married Miesje Sloterdyk on Sept. 28, 1973. He was a lifelong resident of Knoxville and was a retired life insurance sales manager.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in the VFW.
John took great pride in his yard, flowers and taking care of his apartment building.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1988 and two brothers, Henry and Harvey.
He is survived by many friends and relatives, especially two nieces, Kris Eghbald of Mountain, Ariz. and Nancy Rajas of Beeville, Texas.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice Comfort House in Pella.
