Funeral Services for Jack M. Evans of Pleasantville who died June 12, 1979 at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, were held June 15 at Evans-McCleery Funeral Home, Knoxville.
The Rev. Gary Thornlan officiated at the services. Interment was in Pleasantville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Marsall, Les Beaver, Gilbert Phillips, Don South, Joe Cameron and John Raney.
Organist was Anna Oscarson.
Mr. Evans was born in Pleasantville, January 1911, the son of Arlington Jordan and Jessie Merritt Evans. He graduated from Knoxville High School and attended Iowa St. College in Ames. He graduated from St. Louis College of Mortuary Science in 1933.
He married Bernidene Scates, October 8, 1935 at Mercer, Mo.
A veteran of WWII he served in the Navy from April 19, 1944 to November 19, 1945. Mr Evans was a lifelong member of the American Legion and held the office of State Vice-Commander.
He helped Initate the Avenue of Flags at Graceland, Pleasantville and Swan cemeteries. He also helped start the American Legion Scholarship Fund. He was active in the VFW, holding the postition ofService Officer for many years.
While engaged in the funeral home with both his father and later his brother, he served 14 years as Marion County Coroner. He was a former member of the Knoxville Fire Department and a member of the Pleasantville Christian Church. He was a 20 year member of the Iowa and national Funeral Director’s Association.
Surviving are his wife of Pleasantville; four daughters, Betty Chris Metcalf, Phoenix, AZ; Mary Jane McQuire, Mrs. Kenneth (Jackie) Crone, Pleasantville; and Mrs. Steve (Janet) Shelz, Philidelphia, PA; one sister, Mrs. Owen (Elizabeth) Williams, Vista, CA; one brother M. Jordan Evans, Knoxville; and eight grandchildren.
