Helen (Van Trease) Willis/Johns passed from this life on Tuesday, March 8, 1994.
Born March 4, 1908 in Broughton, Illinois, Helen lived most of her life in Knoxville and Oskaloosa, Iowa, where she worked for the Oskaloosa Daily Herald. She found pleasure and fulfillment in teaching children of different ages. Becoming a resident of Austin in 1989, her last two years have been pleasant ones at Heartland Healthcare Center where the nurses and staff have tended lovingly to her physical and emotional needs.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William J. Johns: brother, Ivan Van Trease Jr. mother, Leda (Van Trease) Fee: father, Ivan Van Trease; step-father, Steven Fee; and mother-in-law, Sarah Johns.
Her survivors are daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Stanley Swinton; granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Vicki and Christine Turvey; grand-son. John Swinton and his wife, Jeannie, all of Austin. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Margaret Hootman of Iowa City, Iowa. Gwyneth Whitten of Arizona City, Arizona: former husband. Henry Willis, of Knoxville. Iowa.
The family expressed special appreciation to Dr. John Marietta of Austin Diagnostic Clinic and the nurses and staff of Seton Medical Center.
A memorial service of death and resurrection will be held at 7:30 PM Friday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas. with The Reverend Lynn Barton officiating.
Interment services will be held at the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Iowa, at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
