Hazel Boylan

Return to Class of 1916

Hazel Boylan09/04/1919
Miss Hazel L. Boylan, daughter of Homer and Anna Boylan, was born near Cambridge, Neb., June 16, 1897.

When three years of age she came with her parents to Knoxville, which has since been her home, with the exception of two years while she was securing her college education.

In childhood she attended the public schools of this city until her graduation from high school, June 2, 1916.

Alter completing the work of the local schools she entered on a two years’ course in Drake university in preparation for teaching the primary grades. She received her diploma in this course in 1919. Along with this work she also entered classes in the university in the study of the bible.

In all her school work she was a persistent student and her grades were always exceptionally high. During the last year she was employed as teacher in the schools at Harlan.

Because of impaired health Hazel had decided to secure employment in her home city and a few days ago she secured a position in a local dry goods store. She was planning to go on in this work when the sad accident occurred on the evening of September 4, at the age of 22 years 2 months and 19 days.

The suddenness and violence of her taking away has been a great shock to relatives and friends. On the other hand, there is much comfort to be found in the purity of her life and her activity in Christian service.

In looking back over her life one finds no occasion to express regret. The manner of her death, while inexpressibly sad, was simply the result of one of those unforeseen and unpreventable occurrences which befall the human race constantly.

Hazel became a Christian when 17 years of age and was a member of the Knoxville Christian church.

She is survived by her father and mother, one sister, Mrs. Martha White, and a brother, Arba Boylan, all living in Knoxville. Besides these, there are a number of other relatives. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’ clock, conducted by Rev. Paul E. Becker. Interment was made in Graceland.
