Garry Lee Shives, 71, of Newton died on Monday, August 21, 2023, at his home. The family will greet friends with a lunch from 12-2 p.m., Friday, September 8, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials in Garry’s name (checks made payable to Linda Shives) may be left at the funeral home.
Garry, the son of Harry and Dorothy (Bowers) Shives, Sr., was born on November 7, 1951 in Knoxville. He grew up in the Knoxville and Chariton areas and graduated from Knoxville High School. After graduation, Garry began his career at the Maytag Company and later moved to Newton. He also served his country in the Iowa National Guard for six years.
On July 17, 1998, Garry was united in marriage with Linda Hodge Wolfe at the Farm Bureau in Newton. In 2000, Garry retired from Maytag with 30 years of service. He then did lawn care and is currently working for Pyramid, Inc. He was a member of the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and the NRA.
Garry enjoyed working on projects, talking with his neighbors, sitting on the deck, and helping his father-in-law, Guy. He also liked to fish, hunt, target shoot, smoke meat, and spend time with his family. Garry loved his dogs and his granddogs.
Garry is survived by his wife, Linda Shives of Newton; son, Shawn (Shaun) Wolfe of Pleasant Hill; granddaughter, Brooke Wolfe (Aiden Mantarro Moore) of Pleasant Hill; his siblings, Karen (Ron) Jones of Knoxville, Harry (Alice) Shives, Jr. of Monroe, Roy (Pam) Shives of Minnesota, and Cheryl (Jim) Gale of Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Wilma and Barb Shives and Donna Clement; his father-in-law, Guy Hodge; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Ronald and Kenneth Shives.
