TOMAH, Wis. – Edwina “Eddi” M. Morton-Seitz, 74, of Tomah died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born Sept. 23, 1931, to Edwin and Letha (Wilbur) Six in Knoxville, Iowa. In 1966, she was united in marriage to James Morton. In 1967, they moved to Tomah to manage the Holiday Lodge Golf Course and Supper Club and Jermmos Supper Club of Oakdale, Wis. James preceded Eddi in death in 1974.
On July 12, 1979, she was united in marriage to Vernon Leo Seitz of Cashton, Wis. They owned and operated the Parkview Lanes and Supper Club in Cashton. Upon her retirement, she worked for O’Rustic Supper Club in Oakdale. Having won the hearts of the La Crosse audiences, she is remembered best for her portrayal of Adelaid in the La Crosse Community Theatre Production of “Guys and Dolls.”
Upon her arrival in Tomah, Eddi sought an outlet for her abundant gifts in the creative arts and her strong sense of community service. She found it first by joining Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She became a driving force in the group’s establishment of a community project fund, with a kickoff fund-raising production of the citywide variety shows called “Red Garder Review.” She then joined the effort to found a fledgling Area Community
Theatre. Eddi played the title role in its very first production of “Natalie Needs A Nighty.”
She supported the ACT spinoff, Summer Recoup Troop and a summer dinner theater designed for young performers, which grew to be a family affair. In addition to her technical assistance, she gave memorable performances as the queen mother in “Once upon a Mattress” and as Passionata in “Lil’Abner.” She next turned her attention to the Annual Easter Seals Fund Drive.
She donated her theatrical experience skill of writing, producing, directing and performing in the annual Easter Seals Variety Show. The proceeds from its success made it one of the largest contributors in the state.
Her love of history led her to serve as a board member for the Monroe County History Room, Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bike Museum and also as a board member and secretary for the Monroe County Historical Society.
As her health declined, with the loving support of her husband, Vern, of 26 years, she remained a contributing member until her passing.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon of Tomah; Charles Reagan Alexander of La Crosse; Paul John (Theresa) Brink of Kansas City, Kan.; a stepdaughter, Debbie (Seitz) Taylor of La Crosse; three grandchildren, Keith, Tricia and Jesse Brink; Gail, a former daughter-in-law and mother of her grandchildren; two step-granddaughters, Dannielle Seitz and Alexandra Seitz; a special friend, Ed Weglarz of New Lisbon, Wis.; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her first husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jeannine Parker.
Although her spotlight has diminished, Eddi’s star still shines on through the legacy and memories of the hearts of all who knew her.
Funeral services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah. Pastor Edwin W. Stigen will officiate. Burial will be in Knoxville, Iowa.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 5 p.m. to the time of services Thursday at the funeral home.
