Edna Mae (Stone) Johnson, daughter of Elmer and Effie Feagins Stone was born in rural Marion
County Jan. 24, 1913. She graduated from Knoxville High School, attended Simpson
College, and taught elementary school for five years.
On June 25, 1940, Edna married Carroll
Johnson of Knoxville. They moved to San Francisco, Calif., and later to Portland,
Ore., where Carroll served with the FBI during WWII. They returned to Knoxville
in 1946. Edna was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Edna was a member of
the First United Methodist Church for over 65 years. She taught Sunday School and
participated in many church activities. She also was active in Boy and Girl Scout
programs, P.E.O., First Federated Study Club, and Marion County Historical Society.
She and Carroll hosted the first Rotary Exchange Student, Birgitta Gustafsson Mick,
who was from Finland. They were also a Rotary Exchange Couple to Sweden.
Edna passed
away on Dec. 31, 2008, at the Knoxville Hospital, at the age of 95. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Carroll, her parents, her sister, Mary Smull, and her brother,
John Stone.
Edna is survived by her children, Janet Nelson of West Des Moines, Joseph
(Kristin) Johnson of Leawood, KS, and David (Peggy) Johnson of Knoxville, her sister,
Ruth Rasmussen of Columbia, Mo., six grandchildren: Joseph (Leslie) Nelson of Atlanta,
Ga.. Charles (Wendy) Nelson of Denver, Colo., Adam (Erin) Johnson of Milwaukee,
Wis., Brett (Kimberley) Johnson of Spirit Lake, and Andrew and Caroline Johnson
of Leawood, Kan., and four great-grandchildren, Emily and Monica Nelson, Kaleb
Johnson, and Caitlin Johnson.
In Celebration of the Life of Edna Mae Johnson, Funeral,
Services were held on Jan. 5 at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville with
Pastor Neil Montz officiating.
Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
