Dorothy Corrine (Alley) Ellis was born on August 11, 1920, in Red Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Plato and Molly (Coffey) Alley. Dorothy was raised in Red Rock and graduated from Knoxville High School. She attended Central College and received her teaching certificate. She taught country school for several years.
Dorothy was united in marriage to John Ellis on March 6, 1943. The couple moved to a farm west of Knoxville, where she helped her husband on the farm. Dorothy also worked at the Overall Factory and at Look Magazine in Des Moines. She spent most of her career working at Baker Drug.
John and Dorothy moved to St. James City, Florida in 1976 where they lived for over 20 years. They moved back to Knoxville in 1998 but wintered in Arizona with their son.
After John’s passing in 2002, Dorothy moved into Park Lane Assisted Living. She spent many happy years there until illness forced her into the Good Samaritan Society Home in Indianola last year.
Dorothy was a member of St. Anthony’s Church and the St. Anthony’s Altar & Rosary. While living in Florida, she was on the election committee.
She loved the outdoors and was a member of a camping club. She and John loved to fish and hunt mushrooms. She enjoyed dancing and crosswords. Dorothy liked baseball and would often play catch with her children.
Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society in Indianola at the age of 93 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John, and her siblings, Rhoda Haug, Reena McCrea, Coleen Agnew, Don Alley, Thelma Smith, and Orvid Alley.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, John Ellis of Knoxville, Judith (Carroll) Carter of Delray Beach, Florida, and Jim (Diane) Ellis of Knoxville; brother, Dick Alley of Newton; grandchildren, Blair Ellis, Robert Ellis, Angela Jackson, Jackie Ellis, Ryan Ellis, Dustin Ellis, Carrie Carter, and Jeff Carter; great-grandchildren, Michelle Herrera, Alicia Bane, Christina Ellis, Dominic Ellis, Jeremiah Ellis, Isabella Ellis, McKenzie Ellis, Bailee Ellis, Alexia Ellis, Jury Ellis, Emma Ellis, Riley Jackson, Logan Jackson, and Garrett Jackson; great-grandchildren, Careal and Caliyah Carter and Kamryn and Carter Schultz; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Knoxville.
Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery Knoxville. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Jude Hospice.
