Doris Darlene (Shappell) Piekema was born on April 9, 1927, in Knoxville, Iowa, the daughter of Edna Lois McVey and Marion Leslie Shappell. Doris grew up in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School.
She was united in marriage to Charles Piekema at the Knoxville Christian Church on June 18, 1950. The couple made their home in the Roland/Story City area for many years.
Doris was a technician at the Bournes Corporation in Ames for 30 years, retiring in 1989. She had lived in Indianola for the last 15 years.
Doris was devoted to her family and loved to spoil her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid television watcher, especially Wheel of Fortune, and would sit and crochet while watching her shows.
After moving to the nursing home, Doris enjoyed playing bingo and seldom missed her Friday games.
Doris passed away on her birthday, Thursday, April 9, 2015, at the Westview Care Center in Indianola at the age of 88 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Gary Tolley; and brothers, Charles and Larry Shappell.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Nick (Marian) Piekema of Lacona; sister, Dorothy Richardson of Knoxville; grandchildren, Jason Piekema, Aaron (Julie) Piekema, Justin (Iris) Piekema, Kindra (Martin) Smith, Parry Tolley, Camron (Bridgett) Tolley and Breann (Justin Cole) Tolley; and great-grandchildren, Renee, Tristan, Brooke, Abigail and Nicholas Piekema, Trenton Erickson, Ava and Rylee Smith, C.J. Tolley, and Gabrielle Cole.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville with Pastor Andy Hermanson of the Lutheran Church of Hope officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, April 12 from 4-6 p.m.
