Doris Georgene (Long) Maltby passed away in peace and faith surrounded by her loving family on Sept. 29, 2014. Doris was the first child born to Leonard and Alwilda Long on Aug. 13, 1934, in Attica, Iowa.
After graduating from Knoxville High School, she went to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she earned her teaching certificate and was an Old Gold beauty queen in 1954.
While in college she met and subsequently married James D. Maltby, an Eldora native and music major at UNI. Following graduation, she taught kindergarten in Mount Vernon schools. After their marriage in June 1955, she and Jim made their home in Ida Grove and worked as teachers. Following one year in Long Island, New York, the couple moved back to teach in Washington, Iowa.
The Maltbys moved to Fairfield in 1959 where Jim started his career with State Farm Insurance and Doris became a full-time mom following the birth of twin boys. They added a daughter to the family in 1964 before moving to Indianola in 1971.
An active member of P.E.O. Chapter NG and Indianola’s First United Methodist Church, Doris loved books, traveling, her flower garden walks around the neighborhood, and most of all her grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother, and brother Steven Long.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, sons Kent (Mary) Maltby, and Craig (Jan) Maltby, daughter Sara (Doug) Opie, brother Jim Long (Betty) of Knoxville, and grandchildren Erin and Jill Maltby, Joe and Miles Maltby, Alexis Opie Johnson and Ross Opie.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 1 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. A private family ceremony and burial will be held in Knoxville.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Indianola Public Library in Doris’ name.
