Richard “Dick” Shinn, age 67, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, November 2, 2013 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Dick was born in Knoxville, Iowa, on September 28, 1946, the son of Joseph Haskin and Lela Marie (Harrison) Shinn. Dick was raised in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School, Class of 1965.

After high school, Dick immediately enters the workforce. Most of his working career was spent as a truck driver. Dick trucked for himself, Shinn Trucking, and other carriers. He also worked as a home improvement salesman, as a 3M employee and he owned and operated a coal mine with his father in Attica.

Dick had a number of hobbies he appreciated. He was a lifelong Iowa State Fan, loved all types of auto racing, enjoyed playing cards & shooting pool, and relished trips to Florida. He was especially proud of his 1965 Ford pickup truck he restored and drove.

Dick is survived by his children, Michele (Bill) Belzer of Grimes, Iowa, and Richard (Mindy) Shinn of Rockwell City, Iowa; and six grandchildren, Kaylyn, Jacob, Garrett, and Dillon Belzer, and Trevor and Erin Shinn.

He was preceded by his grandparents; his parents, Joseph and Lela; and his brother, Joe Shinn.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Graceland Cemetery of Knoxville.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Knoxville Public Library or to the Save Our Stadium Foundation, “S.O.S.”.
