Dennis “Wils” Wilson, 56, of Montezuma died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, due to a massive heart attack.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2009, at the Montezuma High School Gymnasium with Reverend Kevin Korver of the Third Reformed Church in Pella officiating.
Visitation will begin after 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 4:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m. A time for sharing will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening during visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dennis Wilson Educational Scholarship.
Dennis Scott Wilson, son of Scott and Betsy (Barnett) Wilson was born on September 21, 1952, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
He was a 1970 graduate of Knoxville High School. His first marriage was to Christine Trabert
In 1971 Wils was drafted into the United States Army where he served as a Military Policeman in Camp Casey, Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1974. He attended Central College in Pella receiving his BA in English with a teacher’s endorsement in 1978
On June 27, 1993, Dennis was united to Catherine Alshouse. Wils taught at Montezuma Community School for 28 years.
He took a sabbatical from Montezuma Community School to teach at Meskwaki Settlement School for two years and worked at Airgun Express in Montezuma for one year before returning to Montezuma Community School. He was also a Knoxville Speedway announcer for several years.
Wils coached multiple sports at various levels touching many lives along the way. He enjoyed coaching and taking kids to basketball camps.
He was a wonderful and caring teacher. Wils was known for giving his students nicknames.
He had a passion for golfing, gardening, coaching, and traveling.
He mostly enjoyed spending time on the family farm, “conversing” with his brothers and especially being with his grandson, Reece.
His memory is honored by his wife of 15 years, Catherine of Montezuma; three brothers, Doug (Twylah) Wilson of Knoxville, Bob Wilson of Knoxville, and Randy (Diane) Wilson of Knoxville; two step-sons, Aaron McCaslen of Fontanelle and Shane (Christy) McCaslen
of Montezuma, one special grandson, Reece McCaslen of Montezuma, and five nieces and nephews, Heidi Robison, Holly Job, Brad Wilson, Leah Wilson, and Betsy Wilson.
Wils was preceded in death by his parents, Scott and Betsy Wilson. A memorial website has been created in honor of Dennis “Wils” Wilson.
