DeMaria Hughs was born December 8, 1962 and attended school at Knoxville, Iowa.

An 18-year-old Knoxville girl died Friday, January 9, 1981, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines of head injuries suffered in a one-car accident in Warren County early Thursday.

A spokesman for the Warren County Sheriff’s Department said the victim, Demaria Hughs, was a passenger in a car that rolled over into a ditch about 2 a.m. Thursday on Iowa Highway 5, two miles east of Hartford.

He said the driver, Patrick Scott Bales, 21, of Dallas apparently had swerved to avoid striking a cow before losing control of the car.

Bales was listed in serious condition at Mercy hospital late Friday. Another passenger, who was to unidentified, was treated at the hospital and was released, officials said.

We all realize that death can come at any age, but it seems particularly tragic when we learn of the death of a young person. DeMaria Hughs was only eighteen years old when she lost her life in an auto accident. Her many friends and her teachers remember her as a girl who was smart, pretty, and cheerful.

She always seemed optimistic about the future and confident in herself and her abilities. She did very well in
school and was able to complete her high school credits by the middle of her senior
year. She had plans to go on for more education, and she was in the process of commuting
to it when her car left the road and she was killed. Everyone who knew her feels
the deep sense of loss, but we are all grateful for the years that her life touched ours.

The yearbook staff and the Class of 1981 dedicate this book to the good memories
we have of DeMaria Hughs.

An obituary for DeMaria is not available.
