Funeral services for Delbert Austin Hayes, 67, of Melcher-Dallas, who died on Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, were held on Saturday, September 22, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Melcher-Dallas.

Father Mark Spring officiated at the services. Music was provided by Kevin Konrad, organist and Chris Overgaard, soloist.
Interment was at the Dallas Cemetery. Pallbearers were Vernon Bauer, Stanley Bingham, Brian Thornton, Kevin Lamb, Lloyd Willoughby and Tom Salsberry. Burial honors were provided by the American Legion Post 632.

Delbert was born February 22, 1934 in Knoxville, to Austin Charles and Clara Margarite (Wallace) Hayes. He married Sondra Lea Robinson on July 6, 1957 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. They lived in the Knoxville and Chariton areas before settling in Melcher-Dallas for the past 40 years.

Delbert worked at John Deere Des Moines Works as a Quality Control Inspector for 30 years before retiring in 1995. He belonged to the United Automobile Workers of America Local 450.
He served as Mayor of Dallas and was past president of the Local Jaycees.

He loved spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rita Ann Stanley.

He is survived by his wife, Sondra of Melcher-Dallas; three sons, Mike of Des Moines, Cortney of Oskaloosa, and Adam of Melcher-Dallas; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson; and his siblings, JoAnn Klobnak of Hamilton, Nancy Clark of Melcher-Dallas, and Terry Hayes of Knoxville.

Memorials were requested to Mike and Barb Hayes for medical expenses. Arrangements were made by Pierschbacher Funeral Home.
