Cleo Francis (Black) Hill was born on September 19, 1911 in Marion County, Iowa. She was one of six children born to Olive Brady and Robert Black.
Cleo attended a rural school, Dallas High School, and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1928. Cleo graduated from Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls. For 15 years she taught in rural, Columbia, Williamson, and Knoxville schools.
Cleo Francis Black was united in marriage to Vernon P. Hill in 1937. To this union, one son was born. The couple made their home in Knoxville.
Cleo was a member of the First Christian Church in Knoxville.
She enjoyed flower gardening and watching the birds. “Her Boys” were the center of Cleo’s life. She was interested in all their activities and took great pride in their accomplishments.
Cleo Hill passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at Westridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 97 years, 3 months, and 5 days.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; three sisters, Daisey Duncan, Stella Bellamy, and Joy Flanagan; and two brothers, Raymond and Floyd Black.
Those left to mourn her passing are her son, David Hill of Knoxville; two grandsons and their wives, Benjamin and Jennifer Hill of London, Ontario, Canada and Joshua and deSaix Hill of Lafayette, Louisiana; four great-grandchildren, Wesley and Cyrene Hill of London, Ontario, Canada and Hunter and Devon Hill of Lafayette, Louisiana.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 29, 2008, at Williams Funeral Home with Elder William McDonald officiating.
Interment was in Graceland Cemetery. Casket bearers were Arlan Becker, Arthur and Robert Black, Larry Clark, Larry Grimes, and Tom Loynachan.
The musical selection was. “Jesus Is All the World To Me.” Janet Westberg was the vocalist. Jim Kidder was the organist.

Iowa.
