Olious O. "Buster" Washington Knoxville, Iowa Olious O. “Buster" Washington was born on September 17, 1936, in Marion County, Iowa. He was the son of Olious Sr.
and Marguerite (Rumley) Washington. Buster lived all his life in rural Knoxville.
He attended the Liberty Country school during his elementary years and later attended
Knoxville High School, graduating in 1955. Buster was united in marriage to Mary
West on January 21, 1967. This union raised eight children.
Shortly after graduation, Buster worked at a car body and cleaning shop in Des Moines,
Iowa. After a few years there, he moved back to Knoxville where he managed two
auto body shops before finally moving his business to his home. Buster loved sports,
such as football, softball and hardball, excelling in all of them. Buster was a
member of the Attica team for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting,
fishing and trapping.
Buster was a devoted husband, son, father, grandfather and
great-grandfather. He was highly respected in the community. Buster passed away
on Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital at the age
of 66 years, 1 month and 5 days.
Mr. Washington is preceded in death by his father, Olious Sr, two sons; Stacy and
Olious III, and one sister, Patty Washington. Left to cherish and honor his memory
is his best friend, Mary Kirkpatrick of Des Moines, IA; two daughters: Michelle
and her husband, Steve Jordan of Newton, IA and Desiree Washington of Des Moines,
IA; four sons and their wives: Tracey and Lynn Washington fo Chandler, AZ, Marvin
and Tori Washington of Knoxville, IA, James and Linette Washington of Knoxville,
IA, and Kenny and Bonnie of Knoxville, IA; his mother, Marguerite Washington of
Knoxville, IA; two brothers: James Washington of Knoxville, IA, and Robert and
his wife, Peggy Washington of Melcher, IA; a sister, Shirley Washington Harris of
Des Moines, IA; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; four aunts: Mary Wells
of Des Moines, IA, Pearlie Sceaver of Redondo Beach, CA, Lillian Stinson of Milwaukee,
WI, and Annette Rumley of Pershing, IA, who was like a second mother to him; Joyce
Rumley of Pershing, IA, who he thought of as a sister, and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends. The family wishes to thank the KACH nursing staff and care
givers, for the warm compassionate care given to Buster during his stay there, and
to the many friends and associates who sent flowers, food, cards and letters.
A Celebration of Life for Oliuos O. “Buster" Washington, II was held at 11:00 AM
on Friday, October 25, 2002, at the Zion United Methodist Church in Pershing, IA.
Rev. Steven Bagby officiated the celebration. Intemment was in Zion Cemetery, Pershing,
IA. Casket bearers for the celebration included: Dustin Jordan, Steven C. Jordan,
Steven I. Jordan, Tyrone Jordan, Eric Washington and Jeremy Washington. Musical
selections for the celebration included "Amazing Grace", “The Old Rugged Cross",
" When the Chariots Come" by Brian McNight, " Long Winding Road" and "I’ll Give Peace".
Georgia Bumett, vocalist and Jim Kidder, organist, provided the music for the celebration.
The family was present to greet friends between 6:00 and 8:00 PM on Thursday, October
24, 2002 at Williams Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be given in memory of Buster to the American Cancer Society.
