Funeral services for Alice Josephine (Templeton) Huygens, of Portland, Oregon, who died August 1, 1997, were held August 4, 1997, at Valley Community Presbyterian Church in Portland.

Burial was at Finley Sunset Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Portland Gregg E. Townsley officiated at the services. Music was provided by Frank Lebold, a friend, and teaching colleague.

Alice was born September 16, 1912, in Red Rock Township, the daughter of Joseph L. and Mary Amanda Jones Templeton. She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1929 and attended Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls. She then taught school in a one-room school.

She was united in marriage to James Leonard Huygens on June 7, 1933, in Marion County. The couple lived in Iowa until 1950, when they moved to Portland, Oregon.

She received her BS degree in 1958, and her MS degree in 1965, and taught in the elementary schools of Beaverton, Ore., until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the national teachers ‘ honorary society, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and was a long-time member of Valley Community Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Trimble, of Fremont, Calif., and Mary Hermes, of Bend, OTC.; two sons, Jim of Paradise, Mont and Joe, of Portland; a sister, Sarah Roetman of Knoxville; a brother James of rural Knoxville nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
