Alice McCarthy McKahan, a Rancho Bernardo resident since 1981, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 2 following a sudden illness. She was 90 years old and had been an active member of the Casa De Las Campanas community for 11 years with her husband.

Alice arrived on Jan 6, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa the second of 4 children born to Helen and William McCarthy. She excelled at academics and athletics and after graduation worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Iowa and Oregon. Alice then continued with her studies at Marquette University. In 1949, she married Bob McKahan in the Log Chapel at Notre Dame where he was a graduate.

Between 1950-57, Alice was a busy young Mom after having four children in rapid succession. The family of six moved numerous times due to Bob’s career at AT& T before settling in a lovely Tudor home in Winnetka, Illinois. Alice was very active in her Catholic church, her children’s schools, and the local community.

Those who knew Alice remember her as a caring, loving mother and wife who placed a high value on her strong religious faith, family, and friends.

She never forgot a birthday or special occasion by sending one of her signature Hallmark cards, signed ” Love, and prayers.” Alice was a true lady always admired for her gracious good manners, soft-spoken wisdom, sense of style, and her beautiful white hair.
