Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes (Wren) Stittsworth, 89, of Knoxville, who died on Thursday,
June 7, 2001, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital, was held on Monday, June 11, at
St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Knoxville.
Rev. Mark P. Spring officiated at the services. Music was provided by Geoffrey Shutltz, organist, and Cynthia Thill,
pianist and flutist. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery.
The casket bearers were Mike, David, and Steve Conway, Bob Momyer, Danny Vernon, and Fran Van De Boc.
Agnes was born on May 20, 1912 in Knoxville. She was the daughter of William Wren and May
(Stickle) Wren.
She was raised in Knoxville and graduated with the Class of 1930.
She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College and then taught for two semesters.
She then enrolled in A.I.B. and after graduation, she worked as a secretary.
On September 27, 1943, she married Tom Stittsworth in Charleston, S.C.
The couple first lived in Knoxville and then moved to Des Moines. They also lived in Excelsior Springs,
Mo., Grand Island, Neb., and Sioux Falls, S.D. before returning to Des Moines.
Agnes retired from the Housing and Urban Development office in Des Moines after 20 years
of service. She loved music and had taught piano in Excelsior Springs and had been
very active in the St. Anthony Choir. She also served as Eucharistic Minister for
many years.
In more recent years she enjoyed traveling to many different places
with friends. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the Altar & Rosary
Society and a 60-year member of the Iowa Cappa Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom; two sisters, Bernice Conway
and Florence Ewart; brother, Tom Wren and her nephew, Dr. Robert Conway. She is
survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Archie and Glenda Stittsworth of Grand
Island, Neb.; niece, Mary Stahowick of Des Moines; nephew, Joe Conway of Knoxville
and many great nieces and nephews and friends.
Memorials may be made to the St.
Anthony Memorial Scholarship Fund or the St. Anthony Cemetery. Arrangements were
made by Bybee & Davis Funeral Home.
