Funeral services for Richard L. Fortner, 76, of Burlington, who died April 25, 2000, at St. Francis Cont, Care Center, were held April 28 at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Tyrone Henderson officiated at the services. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery.

Richard was born on June 21, 1923, in Knoxville the son of Ploy Fortner and Jessie (Templeton) Fortner. He graduated from Knoxville, Iowa High School and attended both Drake University and Iowa State University. Richard farmed in Missouri and Denmark, Iowa area and owned RL Fortner, Inc. in Lee County which produced explosives.

On September 9, 1945, he married Jeanne Schram in Des Moines,
Iowa. She died on September 5, 1976.

He later married Edith (Smith) Fortner on February 6, 1983, in Burlington, Iowa.

Richard attended First Baptist Church in Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, and one sister.

He is survived by his wife Edith Fortner of Burlington; daughter, Tanis (Mike) Mueller, Postville, Iowa; step-daughter, Pat McMurray, Burlington, Iowa; two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church and OSF St. Francis Continuation Care Center.

Arrangements were made by Lunning Chapel in Burlington.
