Services for Dan Speed, 78, who died Feb. 27, 1981 at his home, were held March 3 at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home.

Rev. Kenneth MacLeod officiated at the services with interment in Graceland Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tom McNeish, Paul Clark, Don Smith, H. W. Pete Worstell, C. W. Van Rees and Lowell Steele.

Mr. Speed was born July 31, 1902 in Marion County, the son of Loren and Media Watkins Speed.

He spent his early childhood in Missouri, before returning to this area. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1922, where he was an outstanding athlete in football and basketball.
He attended the University of Iowa, graduating from the school of pharmacy.

He was a member of the basketball team that won the Big 10 Championship in 1924.
He was employed at Osborn's, a former Knoxville pharmacy, before opening his own business that was known at Speed's Pharmacy. He also owned and managed a "candy store and ice cream parlor known as the "Sweet Shoppe," located on the south side of the square for several years.

He married Madeline Vanderwilt on April 5, 1928. She preceded him in death in 1967.

Two brothers, Eugene and William of Knoxville preceded him in death.
He is survived by several cousins and other relatives.
