Funeral services for Michael Kenneth McKay, 45, of Knoxville, who died on Sunday,
May 6, 2001, at his home, were held on Thursday, May 10, at First United Methodist
Church in Knoxville.
Rev. Peter J. Peterson officiated at the services. The eulogy
was by David Johnson. Music was provided by soloist Katie Davis and organist Linda
Gehling. Advertisement Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Casket
bearers were Dan, Bob, John, Chris, Matt and Andy McKay.
Mike was born on May 24,
1955, in Knoxville, the son of Robert and Patricia (Bass) McKay. He graduated from
Knoxville High School in 1973. He married Janice Mitchell on September 14, 1974,
in Knoxville.
He worked for B & H Construction and as a self-employed contractor
in Arizona, Des Moines, and Oskaloosa. He became a partner in McKay Insurance in
1985. He was the chairman of the Knoxville Planning and Zoning Commission and past
chairman and current member of the Knoxville Chamber's Economic Development Council.
He served on various Chamber of Commerce committees, too numerous to mention. He
was past-president of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, Knoxville Little League,
and Knoxville Babe Ruth League.
He was also a member of the Independent Insurance
Agents of Iowa and the Independent Insurance Agents of America. Mike and Janice
enjoyed following and coaching their children's sports. He was also an avid golfer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Kathy Swank. He is survived
by his wife, Janice of Knoxville; one daughter, Kylie at home; two sons and a daughter-in-law,
Matt and Bev of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Andy at home; his grandmother, Vera
McKay of Knoxville; five brothers, Dan and his wife Jean of Knoxville, Bob and his
wife Cindy of Bellingham, Wash., John and his wife Donna of Mason City, Steve of
Des Moines, and Chris of Knoxville; two sisters, Pat Kvistad of Ferndale, Wash.
and Maggie and her husband Bob Souva of Scottsdale, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews
and many other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Knoxville Heritage
Foundation and Knoxville Education Foundation. Arrangements were made by Evans-McCleery
Funeral Home.
