Richard Kelderman

Return to Class of 1955

Richard Kelderman03/25/2014
Richard Keith Kelderman, son of Bill and Kathryn (Glover) Kelderman, was born August 12, 1937, in Knoxville, Iowa. He attended a rural school in Marion County and then graduated from Knoxville High School in 1955. Two years later Keith and his brother Ted enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Keith was stationed in Hawaii and New York. He was out at sea months at a time and also served as a recruiter and insecurity. He was honorably discharged in 1967.

Keith returned to Knoxville and met his future wife there. He and Sharon Schrum were united in marriage on August 14, 1962, at the Methodist Church in Indianola. They moved to Manning where Sharon needed to fulfill her nursing scholarship obligation at the Manning Hospital. After two years they decided Manning was a good place to settle and raise a family. Two sons were born into this union.

Keith worked for the Manning Municipal Gas Utility; at the State of Iowa liquor store and then at First National Bank. He left the bank in the early 1990s when he started selling cars, first in Carroll and then in Manning. During his retirement, he helped out at Ohde Funeral Home.

It seemed that Keith knew someone wherever he was working and thoroughly enjoyed visiting.
Keith was very active in the community.

He was an active member of the United Methodist Church; American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars. He was elected the founding president of the Manning Jaycees and was a member of Rotary. Keith served as a director of the Manning Community Schools, Municipal Gas Board, and Cable (MMCTSU) Board. He was an avid sports fan and supported all the local schools and university teams.

He spent basketball tournament week in Des Moines many times. For 35 years he was a member of the local football ‘chain gang’ He and Sharon enjoyed many trips over the years.

Keith suffered his first heart attack in 1985 and suffered heart problems for the rest of his life. He died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the age of 76 years, 7 months, and 13 days.
Preceding him in death are his parents and two brothers Billy Kelderman and Ted Kelderman.

Keith is survived by his wife Sharon Kelderman of Manning; two sons Brian (Kristy) Kelderman of Gainesville, FL, and Eric (Stacy) Kelderman of Lee’s Summit, MO; five grandchildren; sister Marjorie (Johnny) Johnson of Oak Ridge, TN; brother Larry ‘Towhead’ (Bonnie) Swayne of Monroe, IA; sisters in law Judie Kelderman of Knoxville and Beverly Politte of Potosi, MO; Sharon’s siblings Stanley Schrum of Manning, Steve (Marilyn) Schrum of Nevada, Sue (Dave) Rauch of Manning, Sandy (Dale) Moeller of Leon, Skip (Coleen) Schrum of Dakota Dunes, SD and Sheila Schrum of Des Moines; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
