Richard Dick Caswell, 97, passed away peacefully in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Sept. 9, 2014. He was born April 21, 1917, in Knoxville, Iowa, where he was raised and worked in the coal mines.
Richard married his first wife, Maxine Simmon, in 1941 and moved to California, leaving Iowa and the coal mines behind.
When Pearl Harbor was bombed, he enlisted in the Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. After his naval service, Richard worked at the Mobil Oil refinery in Torrance, Calif., until moving to Oregon in 1967, where he was employed by Columbia Plywood until his retirement.
Richard actively enjoyed ballroom and square dancing, fishing, and socializing with his friends and family. He also enjoyed fixing things and tinkering with his digital camera and computer.
He loved cars and was an excellent mechanic. After his retirement, Richard and his son, Larry, built a log home west of Keno, where he and his wife, Maxine, lived until her death in 1984.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; his first wife, Maxine; and an infant daughter.
Richard is survived by his wife, Annie of Klamath Falls; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Diann Caswell of Kingman, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Chris Kerns of Klamath Falls; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, who will miss his kind heart and sense of humor.
At his request, no memorial services will be held. Any memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
